Stignano mare is a small exclusive development surrounded by olive and orange groves, close to the beach with a traditional Italian bakery on site, a fruit and veg stall a few metres down the road and other shops close by. The Cattolica, an exquisite, well preserved small Byzantine shrine, overlooks the town. Its plan is square with an inscribed cross surmounted by five cupolas on circular drums. It resembles churches to be found in Anatolia, Georgia and Armenia and also the church of San Marco at nearby Rosano The town of Gerace is approximately a 40 minute drive from Stignao Mare and has impressive cobblestone streets in addition to a 17th century church. The beautiful town of Tropea is just an hours drive with its emerald green water, fine sandy beaches and cliffy bays. Majestically situated above the sea, this history-charged town, which – according to legend – was founded by the ancient hero Hercules, you will find over 50 noblemen’s palaces and 17 churches.
